BF3 Dream of the White Hawk: The Nevermore Campaign, Release 2 -- July 2, 2008:
At the behest of a fellow who emailed me, I am releasing for the first time the current
text of megamodule BF3. Mostly, this is to prove just how little of the module is
complete. Far too much is still handwritten on paper. Of what is here, much needs
revision (because I used these adventures originally with another game system).

table.
Core Rules 2nd Edition (Release 68) -- June 15, 2008:

Core Rules 2nd Edition (Release 66) -- June 11, 2008:
The addition of twenty-nine new pieces of artwork, a corrected Table of Contents and
an updated Alphabetical Index are the only changes between releases 65 and 66... well,
that and updating it to read "2nd Edition." That's right, this is the first release
candidate for the 2nd Edition core rules! Nitpickers, jump in now and find all the little
things I've screwed up... I'm particularly interested in text flow errors, which have
plagued this project since about day one.

possibly add a little artwork before Release 66... which may be, officially, the first 2nd Edition
release candidate.

Core Rules 1st Edition (Release 63) -- July 5, 2007:
Well, here are the new "final" rules. This release contains a great many very small
changes; omitting the basic grammar and spelling corrections, here's what has been corrected.
- Several spells that are noted as reversible in their descriptions were not so noted in
the spell lists.
- Cloudkill should have been described with a three dimensional area of effect rather
than a two dimensional area.
- The roll table for confusion is now done with a d20. The odds have not changed.
- Several spell durations were given as "permanent" when "instantaneous" would be a better
explanation; for instance, healing spells.
- ESP was marked as reversible, but of course it isn't.
- Find the Path has been clarified somewhat.
- Remove Curse used the word "turn" in other than the game meaning; this has been revised
to say "round" instead.
- Web, as written in r62 and earlier, denied those entrapped the ability to speak;
however, the description states that the strands are very large, making this limitation seem
strange. It has been removed.
- The rules for item saving throws was a bit unclear, and has been improved (hopefully).
All the changes listed above were provided by one proofer, Benedict. Also, Nick Bogan supplied
a new version of the maneuverability rules, and I revised the monsters section to be consistent
with the new rules.
New Forms by Scott Abraham -- July 2, 2007:
I've just uploaded four new form PDF's created by Scott Abraham: an Adventure Log,

Core Rules Cover Source and PDF -- February 22, 2007:
I've posted a source document (OpenOffice.org ODT) and a PDF for the covers, front and
back, for the core rules. These covers have been reduced to leave a half inch left and
right margin (and proportional top and bottom margins) to accomodate printing on standard
home printers.
Core Rules 1st Edition (Release 62) -- February 17, 2007:
That's right... these are the FINAL rules! (For some definition of "final...")
This core rule set contains a few minor changes, and a few more signatures. Really,
not much has changed, and that's good... because, if nothing significant is found in
the next week, this version goes to Lulu.com!

Core Rules Release 61 -- February 11, 2007:
A correction has been made to the Combat text, courtesy of new proofreader Benedict Wolf.

this includes the missing rules for item saving throws. Dragonsfoot user Eldrad Wolfsbane
suggested variable natural weapon damage for dragons, which I have implemented in this
version.

BF1 Morgansfort: The Western Lands Campaign, Release 8 -- February 5, 2007:

artwork. Click Here to Download!
Core Rules Release 59 -- February 1, 2007:
New contributor Arthur Reyes has provided additional explanatory text for the Saving Throws
section. New contributor Nazim N. Karaca carefully analyzed the price, weight, and damage
figures of a number of weapons, and provided well-considered changes to the price and weight of
some of them. Playtester Chuck Schoonover pointed out several errors in the rules, including
serious errors in the Wall of Stone and Wall of Iron spells, which I have corrected.
New proofreader Serge Petitclerc found a few more really annoying little errors, which are
now fixed.
This release is being presented "Lulu.com ready" with covers removed and resolution set to 300dpi.
This makes the files a lot bigger... you've been warned!
Owing to stability issues related to that size change, the OpenOffice.org download has been
broken into two sections; I'm using a PDF merge tool to put the resulting PDFs together.
This is the last major change before the print version! (yay!)

Here is the first version of Brendan Falconer's rules for the Jester class. I have included
his notes at the end, with my commentary added in red. Please post your own commentary in the
Dragonsfoot.org thread in the Workshop
(The
Olde Dungeoneer's Almanack).
Core Rules Release 58 -- January 11, 2007:
The Halfling Fighter/Thief has been eliminated from the rules, as there is little or
no good reason to play one. Numerous small corrections have been made, thanks to the
able proofing of Daryl Burns. New dice photos have been inserted, courtesy of Kevin Cook
at dicecollector.com. We are another small step closer
to print publication...
Core Rules Release 57 -- January 2, 2007:
Many, many small changes in this revision, courtesy of Daryl Burns. In particular,
the missing details for the Black Pudding are now present. This release is also the first
to use the new release numbering system.
Core Rules Release 2006.56 -- December 27, 2006:
This release incorporates numerous corrections suggested by James Roberts (in the Spells
section) and Daryl Burns (in the Treasure section). Also included is the new Magic Jar
text, clarified after extensive discussion on Dragonsfoot, and a few other items also
hashed out there. With this release, I'm freezing sections 1-3; no text appearing
prior to the Adventure section will be touched, excepting only the most egregious of errors.
The Treasure section is, in my opinion, pretty solid, but as Daryl has indicated that he
plans to do some further work there, I'll hold off on freezing it until next release.
Core Rules Release 2006.55 -- November 29, 2006:
Many, many changes:
- This version contains proofing corrections courtesy of James Roberts.
- Also, Dragonsfoot member SaveForHalf pointed out some errors in a few spells,
which have been corrected. He also suggested magical trap detection revisions
for the Thief, which I have added.
- After some discussion on Dragonsfoot, several spells have been changed:
- Magic Missile has been revised mainly for balance issues.
- Cure Critical Wounds is gone, again for balance reasons; the hit point restoration
power of Clerics was about three times higher at 20th level, and twice as high at
10th level, than I wanted, relative to the number of hit points granted to the
various classes at commensurate levels. Similarly, the healing power of Cure
Light Wounds has been revised slightly, from 1d8+1 to 1d6+1, and likewise the dice
for Cure Serious Wounds have gone down from d8's to d6's. Wall of Fire replaces
Cure Critical Wounds in the 5th level Clerical Spells table.
BF1 Morgansfort: The Western Lands Campaign 2006.7 -- November 7, 2006:
Yet another release with Old Island Fortress updates from Mark Goss and myself.
Most of the rooms are filled in now; I have just a few more to complete and this part will
be complete!

BF1 Morgansfort: The Western Lands Campaign 2006.6 -- October 15, 2006:
Another release with Old Island Fortress updates from Mark Goss... you'll just have to
read it if you are curious.
Mike Hill's Character Sheet Updated -- October 15, 2006:
Mike submitted an updated version of his A4 character sheet (revised after his players
used it for the first time).
Mike Hill's Character Sheet Posted -- October 8, 2006:
Mike Hill has submitted a nice PDF character sheet; it's A4 rather than letter, but of course
Acrobat will scale it to fit your paper (and if you use A4 paper normally anyway, all the better).
Core Rules Release 2006.54 -- September 27, 2006:
New explanatory text for saving throws has been added at the behest of Dragonsfoot user olaberg.
Remaining monster XP values have been filled in, and the Elementals are completed at last.
This is it, guys... this text is final. I won't accept any more complaints of "this is broken"
without replacement text being provided; put your money where your mouth is, so to speak.
This is the version that will be printed. Of course, proofing comes first...
New Domain Name: BASICFANTASY.ORG Yes, I did at last register a domain name for
the Basic Fantasy rules. Here's hoping someone likes them besides me.
Update: In a fit of stupidity I failed to collect the download statistics file
correctly; thus, download stats for all BFRPG projects from late February on are lost.
Sometimes I can be really stupid...
Update Part II: Some of the stats have been recovered; the numbers are at least
a reasonable approximation of facts now, except for a few of the newest items.
BF1 Morgansfort: The Western Lands Campaign 2006.5 -- September 23, 2006:
Still more of the Old Island Fortress filled in by Mark Goss, including a couple of rooms
with nasty surprises...
BF1 Morgansfort: The Western Lands Campaign 2006.4 -- September 19, 2006:
A few more updates to Morgansfort proper, including the missing smithy as well as
names for some of the NPCs, all courtesy of Mark Goss. I've also completed the
reformatting of the wandering monsters section of the Nameless Dungeon, so that it
no longer requires landscape format.
Fighter Subclasses: A Basic Fantasy Supplement Release 2006.0 -- September 17, 2006:
This article by William Smith provides "basic" versions of the Barbarian, Paladin, and Ranger.
Alignment: A Basic Fantasy Supplement Release 2006.0 -- September 17, 2006:
This is Todd Roe's revision of the d20 SRD alignment system, for use with BFRPG.
Sorcerers: A Basic Fantasy Supplement Release 2006.0 -- September 16, 2006:
Here's Ray Allen's version of the Sorcerer class for BFRPG.
BF1 Morgansfort: The Western Lands Campaign 2006.3 -- September 16, 2006:
Several more areas on the Morgansfort key have been detailed, courtesy of new contributor Mark Goss.
Check out the Bank, the Gambling House, the herbalist and the semi-retired magic-user; also the common
warehouse is now detailed.
The Fine Art of Monster Conversion 2006.2 by Ray Allen -- September 4, 2006:
Ray's been busy! Here's the latest revision of his conversion article.
The Fine Art of Monster Conversion 2006.1 by Ray Allen -- September 3, 2006:
Here as requested are Ray's instructions for converting d20 monsters to BFRPG. Enjoy!
Illusionists: A Basic Fantasy Supplement Release 2006.0, and Druids: A Basic Fantasy Supplement Release 2006.0 -- August 31, 2006:
As discussed on Dragonsfoot, I've decided to move away from the Basic Fantasy Companion idea and
instead release a number of short articles describing specific optional rules. I'm also open
to submissions of such works by others; as sufficient material becomes available to make self-publishing
cost effective, I'll compile the articles together into one or more issues of the Olde Dungeoneer's Almanack.
At any rate, to start the process rolling, I've decided to release these (very unfinished) articles for the Druid
and Illusionist classes. Anyone wishing to submit articles for BFRPG should download at least one of these articles,
and use it for a template.
Core Rules Release 2006.53 -- August 31, 2006:
Dragonsfoot user olaberg pointed out some spell discrepancies, which have been resolved.
Another piece of art, a "generic" dwarf by Dan Dalton, graces the character races section.
Now we just need to illustrate elves... everyone ought to know by now what a human looks like, right?
The missing disease details for rats and giant rats is now included, as well as new rules for
Constitution loss and recovery (in the Encounter section). Finally, a new set of rules for
magical research, combining material from Luigi Castellani with some of my own ideas and a few
bits from the forum thread, has been added (in the Game Master section).
Companion Release 2006.0 -- August 7, 2006:
This is the first release of the Basic Fantasy Companion, and boy, there's not much here.
Hopefully this seed will sprout...
New Character Sheets by Ray Allen -- July 31, 2006:
Ray "maddog" Allen has provided us with a landscape character sheet, along
with Magic-User and Cleric spell sheets. Get them from the
downloads page.
BF2 Fortress, Tomb, and Tower 2006.0 -- July 31, 2006:
This is the first release of the combined module, and the first appearance
of the new cover art by Steve Zieser. The module includes the last released
version of Fortress of the Iron Duke as well as the first ever release of
Tomb of Karsma Megalos. Crooked Rock Tower isn't even started yet... just a pile
of old paper maps and a hard-to-read (handwritten) key on my floor right now.
Core Rules Release 2006.52 -- July 29, 2006:
This version includes additional artwork by Luigi Castellani; I'm especially pleased
with his rendition of the magic sword known as the Star of Avault (on page 45 in the
Encounter rules, above the Combat heading). New instructions for spell acquisition
are now included in the Game Master's section. The Sleep spell has been revised
due to discussion in the Dragonsfoot forum thread.
Core Rules Release 2006.51 -- July 17, 2006:
This version has been proofread by Daryl Burns, who pointed out many details that
needed clarification. He also supplied descriptive text for the player character
races. Changes have been made to the damage figures for the light
and heavy crossbow, as a consequence of the discussion of the subject on Dragonsfoot.
Luigi Castellani provided rules for wrestling; after some discussion on Dragonsfoot,
a revised version of his rules have been included. Luigi also supplied some new
artwork (check out the giants). Dan Dalton provided a weapons rack drawing
to decorate the Equipment section, as well as a picture of a Halfling; I understand
he plans to draw additional character-race pictures for the core rules as well.
Core Rules Release 2006.50 -- June 24, 2006:
This version has been proofread by Tonya Allen (thanks!) as well as myself, and is
much improved in many places. The only substantial change is that Elves now receive
a +2 saving throw bonus on Magic Wands as well as Spells; I thought it strange that,
in many cases, an Elf might have a better Spells save than his or her Wands save, so
I extended the bonus to cover both.
BF1 Morgansfort: The Western Lands Campaign 2006.2 -- June 21, 2006:
Several areas on the Morgansfort key have been detailed, including the gatehouse, the
inn, the "Square" and the chapel, with key NPCs added.
BF1 Morgansfort: The Western Lands Campaign 2006.1 -- June 18, 2006:
I've made a pass through the entire document, standardizing the monster layouts mostly;
I also noticed a few "Glainisms" that I removed, making the dungeons more generic.
The intro to the Cave of the Unknown has been revised to fit the Morgansfort area better.
Core Rules Release 2006.49 -- June 16, 2006:
Many thanks to Ray Allen for indexing the document; he found and corrected a few errors along the
way. This release also includes three new pieces of art from Steve Zieser. Not much else
changed, but the index and the art is so cool I had to release a new version right away.
BF1 Morgansfort: The Western Lands Campaign 2006.0 -- June 13, 2006:
This is the "initial" release of this module, but of course as it is a combination of the
original BF0 Morgansfort, BF1 The Nameless Dungeon and BF2 The Cave of the Unknown, it's
really not the first time after all. Very few changes in this edition vs. the original
documents... mostly formatting issues, which will be a constant job for some time.
Core Rules Release 2006.48 -- June 10, 2006:
New artwork by Matt Finch serves to decorate the now-written City, Town and Village
Encounters section. I've eliminated the Castle Encounters section... that sort of
wandering around an uncharted (by the GM, even!) wilderness doesn't appeal to me, but
if someone else wants to write it, I'll put it back in. What that means is... by my measure
of the project, it's COMPLETE. Yes, you read that right. I'm changing the "unfinished"
list into a "nice to have" list, to show the things omitted that aren't necessary to the
project but would be, well, nice to have. If those things never appear, I won't miss them.
With proofing, editing, and possibly a little more artwork, this edition could be published!
Release 2006.47 -- June 3, 2006:
Antonio Eleuteri pointed out an error in the saving throw category
for the Gold Dragon, which I've corrected; then he took on the job of adding class
and level to each and every spell. In the process, he also found errors in two spells,
Dispel Magic and Read Languages, which he corrected.
Nick Bogan suggested a wording change in the Stronghold rules, which I've implemented.
Eldrad mentioned the lack of any text describing the personalities of the various dragon types;
I've added such text, and in the process sorted the dragons into alphabetical order.
The previous order was rather arbitrary.
There are some layout "anomalies" in this version, but I'm releasing it anyway. I hope to
get them straightened out before releasing the next version.
New "Standard" Character Sheet Posted -- May 31, 2006:
This morning I've posted a first "cut" at a standard character sheet for the game.
It's available now on the
downloads page.
Steve Zieser's Character Sheet Posted -- May 30, 2006:
Steve "Carjack" Zieser has submitted a PDF version of the character sheet he used at the
CRGCon (see the May 27, 2006 item below), and it is now available from the
downloads page. Thanks, Steve!
Release 2006.46 -- May 29, 2006:
Nick comes through again with complete wilderness encounter tables,
removing one more item from the "unfinished" list; he's also added
a bit to the Fighter class description. Playtesting revealed some
deficiencies in the Turning Undead rules, which I have hopefully corrected,
and Jason Schmidt pointed out a misprint in the description of the spell
Quest, which I have also corrected. I also discovered deficiencies in the
description of the Web spell, and after some consideration I've made a few
minor changes therein. This edition contains more new artwork courtesy of
Steve Zieser, depicting a Kobold, an Orc and a Goblin; take a look at them
in the Monsters section. Lastly, the Giant Tarantula was missing a substantial
part of its description, and that has been corrected.
CRGCon Spring 2006 Mini-Con -- May 27, 2006:
This was the first game convention of any sort I had attended in more than 15 years, but it
was the best I've ever attended.
Despite my status as a "gatecrasher" (from another state, mind you), I was
made very welcome indeed. I ran BFRPG with a version of Eric Holmes "Tower of Zenopus" for the
morning session, and was able to play in Steve Zieser's BFRPG "Crypt of Doom" game in the
afternoon. A good time was had by all, and furthermore I found (or had pointed out to me)
several rules errors and deficiencies which I am correcting for release in version 2006.46 of
the core rules document.
I hope to be able to attend this event again next year. For those in the Cedar Rapids, Iowa
area who might be interested in this event or other events by these fellows, here's the link
to their Yahoo! group page:
http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/CRGCon
Thanks again to Steve Zieser and Doug Wilson for making me welcome at their mini-con, and to all
the guys who played in the events listed above for making the games fun. You'll all be
listed as playtesters starting with 2006.46... if you don't see your name on the title page,
email me.
Release 2006.45 -- May 24, 2006:
Nick Bogan has provided much-needed additional detail in the "Designing a Wilderness Adventure"
section of the rules. Brawling rules have been added, and some more new Steve Zieser artwork
is in there. The maneuverability class and attack bonus information previously missing from the
Monsters section has been filled in. There is very little remaining to be finished...
Release 2006.44 -- May 20, 2006:
So now I've rearranged again. Tactical Movement no longer has its own "section;" I've rolled
those rules into the regular Encounter rules. The Giant Barracuda has been added to the
Monsters section, courtesy of new contributor Emiliano Marchetti. Specialists and mercenaries
are now detailed. Vehicles have been moved just after Equipment, along with Siege Engines; I've
simplified the siege engine details in this version. Some vehicle information is not yet filled
in, but it's really close now. Also, new artwork has been added courtesy of Steve Zieser,
depicting all four of the "iconic" characters from the intro story.
Release 2006.43 -- May 9, 2006:
I've rearranged the Vehicles, moving them to the Equipment section; many details for several
types of ship are not given yet, as I'm working them out right now (and some details that are
written down may change). I've also added eight spells: Blade Barrier, Cure Critical Wounds,
Feeblemind, Heal, Reincarnate, Telekinesis, True Seeing, and Wall of Iron. Missing descriptive
text has been added to the Green Slime. Some work has been done to the vehicles (particularly
waterborne vehicles).
Release 2006.42 -- May 7, 2006:
Morale and Reactions are now explained in the Encounter section. The NPC party rules
are now complete, but need to be extensively reviewed.
Release 2006.41 -- May 2, 2006:
I've corrected the treasure types for the humanoids; turns out only the Hobgoblin and
Urgoblin entries were messed up. The Narwhal is now complete, and missing descriptive
text has been added to the Elementals. I've dropped the Giant Rockfish... I'm not even
sure which of several "rockfish" it's supposed to be. Both types of Salamander are now
described, as are the Bull Shark, Great White Shark, Mako Shark,
Giant Rattlesnake, Pit Viper, Spitting Cobra, Sea Snake,
Giant Black Widow Spider, Giant Crab Spider, Giant Tarantula,
Pterodactyl, Pteranodon, Giant Rhagodessa, Giant Shrew,
Giant Tuatara and Giant Horned Chameleon.
In other words... ALL the monsters are done!
Release 2006.40 -- April 30, 2006:
Filled in the descriptive text for the Giant Crab, Giant Bass, Giant Piranha
and Giant Leech (hmm, a pattern) as well as Living Statues, Rock Baboons and Sea Serpents.
I've dropped the Giant Sturgeon after a brief "discussion" on Dragonsfoot.
All references to "hull points" have been removed, in preparation for the revised
structure damage rules (already partially implemented in the Stronghold rules).
The wilderness adventure guidelines are now complete; I can't help but think this section
could use some extra help, but nothing comes to mind just now, so I'm calling it done.
Last, but far from least, a version of the Tactical Movement rules Nick Bogan proposed
are integrated into the rules. These rules are largely irrelevant in ordinary dungeon
adventures, but are handy as heck in tactical situations in the wilderness.
Release 2006.39 -- April 23, 2006:
Fixed an error in the Web spell (no area of effect). Finished the Retainers section, and
added a substantial amount to the Specialists and Mercenaries sections.
Release 2006.38 -- April 12, 2006:
One thing that was missing but not noted anywhere was information about "normal men," that is,
zero level or non-classed characters. I've corrected this omission. I have also included a
new table for monster attack bonuses; the previous AB equals Hit Dice progression was just too
much compared to the player character attack bonus table.
Some related introductory text for the Monsters section has also been corrected.
Per previous notes on the Dragonsfoot thread, I've replaced the Giant Oil Beetle with a very
similar Giant Bombardier Beetle. The Giant Tiger Beetle and Giant Cave Locust are also completed.
Additional descriptive material has been added to the Giant Centipede, finishing that entry (I've
also updated their movement, as I believe that these "fast moving" creatures should move at least
as fast as an unarmored man).
Release 2006.37 -- April 10, 2006:
I've reformatted the encounter tables; I'm not certain I like them yet, but they do fit
better now. The "Becoming Lost" subheading is now filled in. I've detailed Bandits and
Buccaneers, and removed Berserkers (not sure what they're good for; if you
miss them, send me text and I'll put them back in).
Release 2006.36 -- April 8, 2006:
More work has been completed on the Wilderness Random Encounters, and the introductory text
for the Treasure section is complete (though I'm not entirely happy with it, I believe it's
adequate). I've also filled in the description for the Roc, Killer Whale and Giant Weasel.
After some research, I've combined the Giant Ferret and Giant Weasel entries... the two creatures
are too similar, being of the same family, and in my judgement both are not needed.
Release 2006.35 -- April 5, 2006:
I've added a monster: the Alicorn (see the entry for Unicorn for details). Information about
NPC Adventurer parties has been added, and work has been done on the Wilderness Random Encounters,
both with regard to rules as well as the tables themselves.
Release 2006.34 -- March 28, 2006:
I've finally filled in the Judging Wishes section, and I believe the formatting of the
Game Master section from that point on is now stable. The Explanation of Equipment section
is complete as far as I'm concerned. Also, the Charging rule has been missing for some time,
but has now been added to the Encounter section.
Release 2006.33 -- March 25, 2006:
A Rate of Fire subsection has been added, mainly to clarify the use of crossbows. Additional
equipment descriptions, including the Tinderbox, flint and steel (courtesy of Stuart Marshall,
who I've added to the Contributors list), have been added. Also,
rules for repeated Turn Undead attempts have been added.
Lastly, I filled in one more subheading
in the Creating a Wilderness Adventure section in the back.
Release 2006.32 -- March 23, 2006:
Text has been added for the Giant Frog/Giant Toad, Insect Swarms, the Cyclops and the Giant Fly.
Candles are
on the equipment list, along with the missing weight for the 10' pole (10 pounds) and descriptive
text for the lighting items in the Explanation of Equipment section.
Release 2006.31 -- March 22, 2006:
I've completed the descriptive text for the Mastodon and Mountain Lion; I set out to fill in the
Panther, but after some research I discovered that Panther is a pretty broad descriptive term.
Mountain Lions, it turns out, technically are Panthers, as are leopards and all sorts of great
cats. I didn't know how many there were... but after some further research I chose to replace the
Panther entry with Jaguar, as they are a distinct type of great cat with unique behaviors.
Anyway... I moved the Pony information into the Beasts of Burden entry (an oversight from earlier)
and added candles to the Adventure/Light section. Now I need to put them on the equipment list...
Release 2006.30 -- March 19, 2006:
Additional monster descriptions have been added, including the Troglodyte and Bugbear by
Evan Moore as well as my own adaptation of the Yellow Mold, Green Slime, all the Giants except
the Cyclops, and the Gnomes. Also added is text in the Adventure section under the Traps and
Random Encounters headings.
Release 2006.29 -- March 18, 2006:
Another Strongholds update by Nick Bogan, a re-arrangement of the GM's section, and a couple
of new monsters (the Blood Rose and the Hangman Tree) are the main additions in this update.
Release 2006.28 -- February 26, 2006:
This release includes updated Stronghold rules, Evasion and Pursuit rules (filled in at last),
capacities for backpacks and sacks (in the Explanation of Equipment section), and two additional
Clerical spells: Regenerate and Restoration. Well, actually, the description for Regenerate is
absent, but Restoration is filled in. Elsewhere in the rules I state that negative levels can
be restored "by magic" but no such magic was actually in there; Regenerate is included to fill
the 6th level spell list out to an even die size.
Release 2006.27 -- February 21, 2006:
This release contains Stronghold rules by Nick Bogan; that's the only significant change in this
version, but I wanted to make sure Nick and I were on the same page.
Release 2006.26 -- February 16, 2006:
Okay, now the dungeon creation guidelines are done. They take up just two pages including a small
dungeon map illustration... I'm real happy with it.
Release 2006.25 -- February 16, 2006:
Call this release the "Magic-Items-Are-All-Done!" release. I dropped one more item along the
way: the Wand of Metal Detection. It's not one I've ever used, and it's way different from anything
in the spell rules. I kept the other detection wands, though I had to write a few from scratch. Also
a little of the text for the dungeon stocking section is in there; I hope to get that part done next.
Release 2006.24 -- February 14, 2006:
This release adds more magic item descriptions (the staves are done!) but drops the Staff of Withering;
it appears it does not exist in the SRD, and I've never used it enough to go to the trouble of
reinventing it. Wilderness movement rates are now given, as well as preliminary rules for traveling
by land, sea and air.
Release 2006.23 -- February 12, 2006:
This version adds two monsters I need for a module: the Blood Rose and the Hangman Tree.
Also, I've added many more magic item descriptions, as well as correcting an error on the
Miscellaneous Magic table.
Release 2006.22 -- February 9, 2006:
This version contains the last three missing spells, courtesy of William Smith, who
also submitted text for the Oil and Holy Water parts of the Encounter section.
This forced me to nail down rules for Grenade-Like Missiles.
Also, this version contains descriptive text for the Tentacle Worm.
Release 2006.21 -- February 8, 2006:
This release adds three more spells from William Smith:
Invisible Stalker, Projected Image, and Snake Charm;
the only other change is a rewrite of the Movement rate rules.
Release 2006.20 -- February 5, 2006:
Many more magic items added with this version, as well as dungeon wandering monster tables and
the "bones" of the wilderness tables. I've also added a bit to the intro story (in the Wandering
Monsters subsection). Finally, this version contains my first cut at changing movement over to a
more d20-natural single figure; the movement rules haven't been revised yet, but all the movement
stats should have been fixed in this version.
Release 2006.19 -- February 4, 2006:
Several new spells from William Smith have been added: Find Traps, Growth of Plants,
Protection From Normal Missiles, Speak With Animals, Speak With Monsters, Speak With Plants,
Striking, and Ventriloquism. In addition, I've added about a page of material to the magic
item section, including descriptions of about half of the potions as well as notes
about magic items in general. I realize this release is REAL soon after the previous one,
but with so much added I just had to get it posted!
Release 2006.18 -- February 4, 2006:
All the monsters have stats! The Unicorn and Vampire entries are done, as far
as I'm concerned, and a good start has been made on several more of those unfinished
to this point. I've eliminated the Thoul (as I'm uncertain of its copyright status),
and included the "replacement" monster: the Urgoblin.
Release 2006.17 -- February 2, 2006:
The main addition for this version is three new spells from William Smith:
Conjure Elemental, Floating Disc and Spiritual Hammer.
Also many more monster stats (some even with additional descriptive text)
are now included, and the document is still under 100 pages!
Release 2006.16 -- January 31, 2006:
The main thing changed in this version is the layout... I've gone with mirrored margins,
as suggested by Stuart Marshall, so as to make the whole thing print out a lot nicer.
An added bonus is that the document is now under 100 pages again! Several errors noticed
by William Smith have been corrected also.
I've cleaned up and simplified the treasure generation tables and added an optional rule
for Magic-Users preparing spells from memory (short answer: don't do it if you don't
have to!). Content-wise, that's about all that's added.
Release 2006.15 -- January 29, 2006:
Okay, now I have statistics for the monsters up through the Gorgon. I was surprised to
find out how much the SRD "nerfed" the Dragon Turtle compared to older versions; I've
restored the biggest draconian to something resembling its former glory. I spent some
time working on descriptive text for the golems, also; I've included some golem types that
come from the SRD as well as my own personal versions of the Amber, Bronze, Wood, and Bone
Golems. They vary somewhat from their original versions, as I felt I should integrate the
two different "visions" of golems.
Release 2006.14 -- January 28, 2006:
I've added statistics for the monsters up to and including the dragons. I've also added
a lot of text in the dragon section; I think they are pretty well complete. I made some
textual corrections (particularly in the Open Game License section) and added more of the
introductory story (in the Treasure section).
Release 2006.13 -- January 26, 2006:
Numerous additions. Most of the spells are there now; only those not represented
in Ray Allen's document, and not already rewritten by myself, are missing. Rules for
spell preparation are in there now, but I'm not entirely happy with them... I'm sure
they could be more brief and/or clear (I'll take clarity over brevity, but I like both).
The document is currently 98 pages long, including the cover.
I have high hopes that I'll be able to keep it down to no more than 129 (128 plus cover).
Release 2006.12 -- January 23, 2006:
Many little changes... some table reformatting, rules for Turning Undead,
some explanatory text in the Monsters section as well as stats for all the A
and B monsters; they're effectively done. Also a few more spells from maddog's
spellbook. Just a lot of stuff.
I printed a few pages (the early pages that look pretty well done to me) and
I'm not happy with how that font looks in print; it aligns badly vertically
on the printer. I'm not sure if Souvenir would be better, as I haven't tried
it yet... I really need Souvenir Demi before I can do that (I have Souvenir Light,
Souvenir Light Italic and Souvenir Demi Italic but not the upright Souvenir Demi).
Release 2006.11 -- January 22, 2006:
Additional "introductory" text as well as more rules in the Encounter section;
this includes Surprise rules and the Clerics vs. Undead table. I chose to
put it into the Encounter rather than Character section as it seems more
appropriate, and less confusing to a newbie generating his or her first
character. Also added the missing Sneak Attack rule for Thieves.
Release 2006.10 -- January 21, 2006:
Several spells added courtesy of Ray Allen, and many more of those to come.
I've also added some additional
introductory text, which my daughter has announced is "Cool!" She followed
up by saying, "You wrote that?" Thanks, sweetie.
Release 2006.9 -- January 20, 2006:
I've added a little bit to the introduction, and mined substantial text
from my Project 74 rules, particularly the Encumbrance section. I've
had to rewrite quite a bit that came from Project 74; I wrote those
rules for expert RPG players, but Basic Fantasy is, well, basic.
Frankly I'm beginning to see Project 74 mutating into a few pages of
add-on rules for Basic Fantasy...
This will be the first public release. I'm adding Basic Fantasy to the
directory on my home page, and announcing it on Dragonsfoot.
Release 2006.8:
Not much new in this one, but I've finally written an introduction.
Release 2006.7:
Still more monster descriptive text copied. In some cases there isn't
enough actual description; I'm going to have to go back over the text
and embellish it, probably when I add the missing statistics. I'm through
the "S" monsters at this point.
Release 2006.6:
Many more monsters descriptions copied, plus some minor text edits.
Also added a rule for ability rolls
that get easier as the character gains levels. I'm going to use that later...
Check out the Mermaid entry... I'm rather proud of it.
Release 2006.5:
It turns out that the 3.5 SRD is a much richer source of monster descriptive text,
even though much must be ignored. I have filled in descriptive text for many monsters,
though some is still incomplete; the material in the Dragon section is from my
own campaign materials, and not from the SRD at all.
I've also completed the thief ability table, and added the optional thief customization
rule (in the GM section).
Release 2006.4:
I've completed my "mining" of the C&C Monsters PDF, and frankly I didn't get much.
Roughly half of the monsters in the document aren't in the list I'm trying to
fill, and of the ones that are, a lot of work was needed to match them to the
rules and to my conception of those monsters. That's not a slam on the Troll Lords...
they just aren't playing the same game I am.
I have inserted empty statblocks for all the monsters. I've also written the
basic character generation rules and the optional rules section (except for
alternative thief abilities since I haven't yet written the thief ability
table).
Release 2006.3:
The "bones" are all there, and I've written
the character generation instruction page (except for the sample character sheet
referred to in the text). All monsters are now listed by name, though there are stats
for only the Skeletons and Zombies. Likewise, there is now a listing of every magic
item and spell by name.
I'm eliminating alignment from the system, and as a result I am removing the Know
Alignment spell. I need to choose another spell to fill out the list for Cleric
Second Level spells; I'm thinking of recreating the spell "Spiritual Hammer" for that
purpose.
